LDHS Newsletter

from Hilary Stroude

Welcome to our first newsletter.

Some of you may know already that the Section 106 for Northstowe phase 2 contains a commitment to provide display and storage for the LDHS archives. In addition the Section 106 has made a commitment to set up a Heritage Core (HC) Group so that a heritage strategy for the new town can be developed. LDHS has been offered a non-voting place on the HC group and I am delighted to have been chosen by the committee to be the LDHS representative. If any of you would like further information on the provisions of the Section 106, as it relates to these two matters, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The first meeting of the HC Group took place this week and the next one is scheduled for September. The discussions ahead will be complex and it may be a while before any progress is obvious. We will of course keep you informed of the details as and when it is appropriate to do so.

In addition, there are 2 events that are coming up which you may be interested in.

There is an Archaeological Open Day on Northstowe Phase 2 on Saturday 8th July. This should be very interesting so we would encourage everyone to attend. There is usually a fair bit of walking involved so stout shoes are recommended. See the Events Diary for details.

In addition to the Open Day there is to be another Test-Pitting weekend in Longstanton on the weekend of 9 – 10th September. Volunteers are needed to dig the test-pits, pot wash etc. In addition we need residents to volunteer some garden for the test pits – all will be restored after the event. If you can help with this please contact Dr Rodney Scarle who is helping to organise the event. For full details, please see this poster.

Finally, we recently raised concerns with the Churches Conservation Trust over the deteriorating condition of St Michael’s church. As a result of our intervention we are now helping CCT and some village residents set up a Friends of St Michael’s Group.

If  you are interested in helping look after this lovely old church please let me have your contact details and I will pass them on.

Please remember you can keep up to date with the work of the heritage society via our Facebook page and/or website.
